Welcome to the TransferReady Commodity Trader Game. This is a fantastic way to let students practice basic Maths skills by increasing and decreasing their investments as the markets change.
Recap of Skills
Increasing by a percentage
If you need to increase your investment by a percentage, you divide your total from the last round by 100 and then multiply by the percentage increase. Now add that to your investment total from the last round.
Decreasing by a percentage
If you need to decrease your investment by a percentage, you divide your total from the last round by 100 and then multiply by the percentage decrease. Now subtract that from your investment total from the last round.
Rules of the Investor Game
You start with £10,000. In each round, you must choose just one commodity (eg: Gold or Oil) to invest in – or leave your money as cash. You can change your investment in every round if you like but you must invest all (or none) of your money. After you press the Get Latest Price Changes button, work out the new value of your investment. If you left your money in cash, it stays the same value. A positive percentage is an increase, a negative percentage is a decrease. Good luck!

Note for Teachers:
The adjustments here are all percentages ranging from +50% to -50% in tens. An alternative method is to calculate 1/10th of their previous total by dividing by 10 and then multiply that number by 2/3/4/5 to work out the actual profit or loss. Then add or subtract as required. Initially this is easy as everyone begins with clean, whole numbers but after a few rounds the numbers become more difficult to calculate. Maybe start off with just 2 or 3 rounds before declaring the winning team / table.
