Super Six Saturdays

Every teacher knows that a great lesson begins with a great starter. A great starter has two main functions;

1. Engage (all) the pupils with the subject matter that the lesson intends to cover, and perhaps more importantly,
2. Switch the pupils’ focus from whatever they have just been doing to whatever they are about to be doing. This part is often given trivial names such as “switching your brain on” but it is actually a very important part of learning. Imagine you are really enjoying a good movie and your phone goes – how long does it take to switch focus from the movie to a complex conversation about, say, work? Now imagine you are ten, you’re playing football or skipping with your friends and your Mum calls you in to do a TransferReady practice paper. Ughhh!
