Crosswords make great verbal reasoning questions because they require the student to perform logical mental shuffling of words. This in turn requires confidence in spelling and word accuracy. They involve a crossword that has one word filled in and requires the remaining supplied words to be filled in.

Example

Complete the crossword so that all the missing words are included. Your answer is the letter in the middle square.

  • ivy
  • tee
  • eve
  • eye
  • bee

In this question, you should notice that “bee” must go into the first column and “tee” into the 3rd column as they are the only “b” and “t” respectively. Equally, “ivy” must then go in the middle column making our answer “v”.
